French wildcard Leolia Jeanjean stunned eighth seed Karolina Pliskova in the French Open second round for a win she said "will change everything".

The world number 227, who lived on minimum wage after a knee injury when she was 15 kept her off the courts for two years, beat the Czech 6-2 6-2.

The 26-year-old has earned a minimum of 125,800 euros (£107,118) here following the upset that surprised even her.

"I don't really know how it's possible, I don't have an explanation," she said.

Jeanjean is a former big hope of French tennis, but after her injury she was dropped by Nike, which ended a 10-year sponsorship deal, and by the French federation, which had assigned her a full-time coach when she was 12.

She then studied in the United States at the Lynn University in Florida and earned a degree in finance, only for her return to tennis be slowed down by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I lived on minimum wage and I didn't live from day-to-day, but week after week," Jeanjean added.

"I put all the money I had into a week's worth of tournaments and if they went well I got another week, but if they went badly I didn't play for two months because it was financially impossible.

"It [the prize money] will make life easier. I can certainly pay a coach, pay my tickets when I go to tournaments. I can actually travel around further away. I can actually have staff."

Karolina Pliskova lost to Ashleigh Barty in the 2021 Wimbledon final

After being handed a wildcard to play at Roland Garros, Jeanjean beat Spain's world number 45 Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the opening round before shocking former world number one Pliskova, who was runner-up at Wimbledon last year.

"I could not try to overpower her, it was impossible, so I had to try to derail her and it worked perfectly," said Jeanjean.

"It's my first Grand Slam. I thought I would have lost in the first round in two sets, and I found myself beating a top-10 player."

Pliskova's loss means seven of the top 12 women's seeds have now exited the tournament in the opening two rounds.

In the first round, Barbora Krejcikova (seeded second), Anett Kontaveit (fifth), Ons Jabeur (sixth) and Garbine Muguruza (10th) all lost, before fourth seed Maria Sakkari and Britain's Emma Raducanu, the 12th seed, went out in the second round.

Jeanjean will next face Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 30th seed, or Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu and will break into the world's top 150.
